In response to Trustmark’s recent report on widespread problems of poor-quality installation of insulation, the Government proposes a review of how the sector is regulated.

The Architects Climate Action Network, whilst acknowledging that regulations have a role to play, advocates a more comprehensive re-think of the Government’s approach to retrofit.

This should include:

  • Investment in training of retrofit assessors, designers and installers in recognition of the complex technical issues that retrofit often presents;
  • The promotion of whole house retrofit plans prepared by suitably qualified professionals, which assess the risks of condensation;
  • Moving away from the use of fossil fuel derived insulation and encouraging the use of natural insulation materials, which are vapour permeable and thus reduce the risk of condensation.
